The Deification of Katrina

The Deification of Katrina

By Visual Artist Grey Cross

"The Deification of Katrina" was created because of an interest in how we as a civilization often deify disasters. I've watched how Hurricane Katrina has become part of the mythos of New Orleans and made the city stronger rather than weaker.

The Hurricane silhouetted against the stained glass window signifies our resilient attitude towards disasters in our life and how we overcome them.

The piece is done on varnished vellum with a silver painted pine border and adorned with glass corner tiles. The hurricane gets its raised 3 dimensional look from the use of silicon. The piece is painted in acrylics with raised line work so to mimic the lead in a real stained glass window. It has also been treated on the back with a special textured material to give each panel the appearance of glass textured glass. The piece is 48” x 48”.

"The Deification of Katrina" is part of the artists Painting With Light Series. These pieces are created with translucent materials so that the piece can be lit from front, or back or both at the same time to create differing effects. The photo seen here is a view of the piece back lit.
